In the early days of Artists First, David, like many other members, lived in Purdown Hospital, which was then part of the Stoke Park Hospital group - established in 1916 and closed in the 1990’s.
David was an extraordinary artist and his artwork sold very well, especially when Artists First had a studio at Spike Island. As a result, only a few of his artworks remain in the Artists First archive.
David was very much at home in the Spike Island studio and although he did take part in some workshops and exhibition visits, he often found it hard to cope with this element of the Artists First’s practise.
David’s pencil artworks had a very light touch, rendering figures, flowers, and scenes of everyday life with simple lines and little or no tonal quality. David worked slowly and silently but frequently suffered from mental health issues which often prevented him from attending the group.
